DISTRICT 3

High Quality Education = A Better Future
Hi, I'm Natalie!

As a mother and grandmother, I know that all of our children and grandchildren deserve to grow up safely and graduate prepared for college, the workforce, and the military.
We are ranked 50th in the Nation for education.
Did you know that almost 80% of students in Las Cruces public schools cannot do math at grade level? [1]
Did you also know 66% of students cannot read at grade level?

Without basic reading skills, it’s even harder to learn math.

We need to make reading and writing the top priority for our kids.

That’s why I’m running for school board.

In the late 1990’s, many workers in Playas, NM needed a childcare center near their community, and a place for kids to learn reading and writing.
So, I earned my C.D.A. (Child Development Associate’s Degree) from Western New Mexico University and opened a childcare center for children up to 12 years old.
Eventually, I opened several other locations in Arizona, finally selling them as we moved back home to New Mexico when my own kids got older.
Now as a bookkeeper and small business owner, I see first-hand young adults who can’t count change or even show up to work on time.
How are they going to keep a job or plan a budget? How are they going to provide for their families?

Other states, like Mississippi, used to be at the bottom of reading and math scores but they have turned things around from being one of the worst to one of the best in the nation!

How did they do it?
They made sure to select high quality curriculum and teacher training programs, while also holding administrators accountable to higher standards.

But our local school board has done nothing to demand higher standards or require our budget dollars to be spent on high quality programs and teacher training support.

Instead, they make excuses for keeping the failing status quo, while keeping parents in the dark about district policies. They overload teachers with more paperwork and more subjects instead of focusing on doing the basics well.

For all the tax dollars we spend on our schools, many of us feel cheated by a failed system and bullied by it when we cry out for change. --Because something has to change.

I will fight to make our schools excellent by standing up for all students, teachers, and parents.

In partnership with parents, I will empower teachers so they can finally bring order back to their classrooms.
Let’s work together with administration, not against each other.

I’m Natalie Chadborn. The time is now. Let’s do this, Las Cruces.
